Lucas C35 Dynamo - commutator refurbishment

Hi everyone.

I've currently got the dunamo from my RP in bits on the bench and hopefully I can get it back together & working again courtesy of some new bearings and brushes. However, whilst there is good continuity on the commutator it is showing the effects of nearly 74 years of use and no doubt at some time in the future it will need to be re-built. It is sufficiently worn that a 'tickle' on a lathe might just finish it off, but a gentle spin in the drill and a clean up with some fine emery cloth might just give it a few more thousand miles of use before I have to bite the bullet.

Can anyone point me towards a reputable engineer who can do a commutator re-fit.

Many thanks

Hi Reckless, I have just had my armature rebuilt and rewound ,in two weeks, by Humphrey and willis in Redhill Surrey 01737 761354 I can recommend them. Cost £96 plus V.a.t.

Re: Re: Lucas C35 Dynamo - commutator refurbishment

Mr Rat (or may I call you Reckless)
Chris Dalby at Kirby Wiske supplied me with an exchange rebuilt armature at around £80 in 2003 for my box saloon. No problems so far but I have probably only done 3-4000 miles since then.
Regards,
Dave.

Re: Lucas C35 Dynamo - commutator refurbishment

I have often seen the advice never to use carborundum /emery paper or cloth on electrical contacts or commutators. The dust is claimed to be conductive. Fine sandpaper is OK though. I found the best thing for contact points to be a diamond spatula from RS components, which can be rubbed very gently on the faces.

Vince Leek at A7 specialised sevices has new ones I think.
