Browsing through the handbook on Wells Cathedral clock - as one does - I came across the following reference.

It do say (p. 19) ..........

"Renewing parts of this age can prove a real headache, and it is said that the well-tempered shaft of an old Austin 7 has been pressed into service as a replacement item!"

This must surely be the oldest recorded application of Austin Seven spare parts (half-shaft?) - unless of course, you know differently.
