re: hoods for chummy

Hi I am restoring a 1929 Chummy but have found the hood has gone too far to restore. Can anyone give me an idea how much this would cost to have trimmed or has anybody done their own, is it a job worth undertaking myself. Thanks

Re: re: hoods for chummy

James,

I highly reccomend David Nightingale to do your hood, it is not a DIY job really and will make/break your car if done correctly/incorrectly.

You can get David on: 01249 701271

His workmanship is second to none in my oppinion and he specialises in doing Austin Sevens.

Good luck

Re: re: hoods for chummy

Agreed David N's workmanship is second to none he repaired the TT's upholstery and has just finished the hood and sidescreens on a good friends 1924 Chummy.
Not the cheapest but the best never is.

Re: Re: re: hoods for chummy

Hello James, If you are a ‘handy’ sort it might be worth having a go. I made my own hood having never previously even used a sewing machine. I used an 1889 boot makers machine that was hand operated much better for a novice as you are libel to sew your fingers together with a modern whiz machine. The 7 hoods are quite simple in construction; if you live near Bristol I will be happy to give you some pointers.
Not wishing to use this forum for advertising, might I suggest getting in touch with the Cornwall Austin 7 Club, who will put you in touch with a lovely lady who will meticulously make you a hood that will beat the bags off of any professionally made hood I have ever seen.

Re: re: hoods for chummy

Hi Thank you very much for the very helpful replys.
I probably am leaning towards having the hood made as I agree if its not right it will seriuosly affect the overall finish of the car. But can you give me an idea what kind of money we are talking about. Am I looking at £300 or £500 or more. I really have no idea what prices might be. thanks again
