indicators, lights and clutch

First of this this is a fantastic forum, i have been reading with interest other posts.

I have recently taken over the restoration of my father 7 ruby 35 and have a couple of questions

One of the indicators was broken round the outside and it needs repairing, is this somthing that can be braized together and if does anyone know any specialists in the somerset area as I canweld but now way tjis compentant?

The other is lights, the car was original and was off the road since 1947 ish and still has the original front headlamp internals will these need to be changed for current laws? and also the rear single light does the car now have to have one on both sides or as the car was build t;ike this it is acceptable, I do not intend driving in the dark very often.

Thought he car engine has been turned every week and oil changed and bores oils by my dad in the last 19 years! It was ruj about 14 yars ago and since then it seems the clutch has seied on, it it likely that if it is started in gear (an old but useful was on unseizing a clutch I employed a few years ago) ir is it an easy item to get to and maybe replace.

Many thanks

Re: indicators, lights and clutch

Can't help very much but there is no need to change the headlamp internals. As to the single rear lamp, that is a surprise because the law was changed in the early 1930's to require 2 lamps. You really need to add another.
Hopefully someone else can help with the other concerns.
Very best of luck with getting the car back on the road without having to do too much.

Brian

Re: indicators, lights and clutch

Hi Martin, You will certainly find plenty of help on this forum, but your next best move is to join an Austin Seven club. Here you will find people with the same model A7. They and others will be pleased to answer your various questions. If you join the Bristol club, you will find we run a second hand spares service for our members. Have a look at www.ba7c.freeserve.co.uk The site currently needs a big tidy up, but you will find a route to contacting and joining the club. There are many BA7C members in Somerset and this would be a good way to meet them.

Re: indicators, lights and clutch

If the clutch has stuck, you may get it to free off by putting the car in top and rocking it back & forward with the clutch pedal depressed. Don´t try it with the engine running - you could break something!

Re: indicators, lights and clutch

Don't all Rubys, up to the last, have a single rear light on the spare wheel cover? Having said that, I think I would contemplate a few more. The bumper bolts are a handy place to mount a bracket or two, one would think.

Re: indicators, lights and clutch

If the car still has its original lighting system I think that it is probably illegal. In 1935 the dipping system involved the ofside light going out and the nearside physically dropping down under gravity when the solinoid was cut. All 7,s only had one rear light when new,and I think this was made illegal in 1961.
