Underbody sealants

I intend to use a clear waxoly to the undersides of my mudguards/valances in the hope that this will extend the life of them. Just got me wondering what may have been used in the 20s/30s or did owners just not bother?

The traditional protection was to liberally apply the old engine oil. After all, especially with a Seven, the chassis along the engine never rusts!
