Great news! Thanks for the info Ruairidh, I'll have to follow up on this one.

Edward
But the example quoted was a mag engined Chummy which doesnt have a nose cone. The starting handle should be still be horizontal however on a mag engined car. There is s peg on the starting shaft which locates on a slot on the guide bolted to the chassis nose piece. This has to be located after using the handle. There is no problems with the cast steel guide but the later aluminium is prone to fracture at the slot, causing the handle to hang down or at best at 45 degrees.

There must be something missing on my mag engine, no slot.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

With the coil motor nosecone the horizontal 'park' position, which moves the shaft forward slightly, provides a seal at the crank entry according to the Austin Service Journal.

The magneto engine crank handle assembly does not have this problem so it is not important to have the crank handle 'parked' horizontally.

Both of my cars have a broken nosecone 'hook' so they hang down, like most vintage cars.

Not a problem- no excessive oil leaks

Tony.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

The other advantage of parking the handle at 9 o'clock is that you can tell if someone has played with it after you have parked in a public place ! I wonder what weight of small child the handle can withstand ? Maybe we need to put a spiky deterrent on them, like the holly leaves the National trust place on their fragile chairs to discourage the placing of errant bottoms.

Yes, its what I aiming towards!

As it stands the spring is far too short to keep the grub screw (bolt)parked back into the slot. I would like to see a picture of a standard mad engine handle and housing assy.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

One of my friends went and had a look through his 1926 and 1927 parts lists books, and discovered that there is no slot shown in the housing.

So maybe earlier handles do dangle.

There is no escape you will always be discovered!

Not a Hornet, 1934 Singer Le Mans. Currently with 1098 A Series internals. When it breaks I will put back in the original Singer engine.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

I have often wondered what keeps those handles from falling out. My handle resides underneath the driver's seat.

OK, I give in, I can't resist it any longer (ugh, a pun!!)...

'Y' fronts stop fall-out..

Chris-

"Unless you park the vehicle front facing on a steep incline!"

Well- you should always park 'nose up'

Tony.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

Geoff, besides what they all saying I agree you, a dangling starting handle in a pretty car like ours is horrible.
Keep tidy. Bert.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

Bert,

Let us not be too cruel to those poor little cars with a broken nose

Tony.

Re: Starter handle: Parking

I recut my ali nosecone freehand with a dremell. Then stretched the spring a bit and all was well (still is 10years later).

Re: Starter handle: Parking

Very helpfull to me as well, I am encouraged to install my handle. Up till now I have carried it under the seat, original handles are hard to come by. Suprising that, considering they make such an awfull noise when they fall out and you drive over them! cheers Russell

Re: Starter handle: Parking

Just wondering about rain water getting past the crank of my ruby. I cant find any info on a seal and looking at the state of the parking spring and shaft a lot of water has been getting in around the handle.
