Ruby Gearbox

Good afternoon all:
I need to take out and replace the gearbox on my Mark 2 Ruby. Is it possible to remove the gearbox without taking the engine out?

I have access to an inspection pit if that would help
.
I'm sure this has been discussed on the "forum" before but I can't find any reference to this topic
many thanks

Re: Ruby Gearbox

John, you should be able to tack the gearbo out of the car,by removing the panels in the passenger footwell

Re: Ruby Gearbox

Yes John. It is. You need to remove the floor panels and then you'll be able to withdraw the gearbox into the passenger compartment.

Re: Ruby Gearbox

If it is the same as the Ruby tourer of the same date there is a bracket between the floor and the crossmember to the left (nearside) of the gearbox which needs to removed as well. You might also find it easier to detatch the clutch pedal and remove it as the gearbox slides out.

Re: Ruby Gearbox

You will find that the floor mounting bracket to cross member is riveted, standard procedure is to drill them out and replace with high tensile nuts and bolts. Be prepared for the hassle lining up the thick spline on the front of the gear box when refitting. I lined up the spline out of the clutch to TDC and the same on the box marking the drive flange to suit.good luck

Re: Ruby Gearbox

Thanks Derek/Andy, that bracket had been removed before and was bolted to the cross member and floor.
Gearbox has now been replaced successfully, thanks to all for replies

Re: Ruby Gearbox

Having refurbed the gearbox, mainly by my pal Chris , I droppe the old box out and refitted the refurbed back in , less than 30 seconds to line up the splines using the abov method, bolted it up and started the car only to hear a rather worrying noise. gearbox back out, the clutch toggles were hitting the taper pins on the clutch actuating arms. The pins were a different diameter than the the second set I had. changed pins and reffited box , I was sure that this would be the 1.5hr one but no 45 seconds. What a difference a new box makes, almost like going deaf.

Re: Ruby Gearbox

Imperial standard taper pins were fitted to the clutch withdrawal levers and have a 1 in 48 taper. When you buy replacements, they will most likely be metric and have a 1 in 50 taper. An appropriate taper reamer is therefore needed. See search engine on taper pins for a little more detail.

Re: Ruby Gearbox

If you put '7/32 taper pins' into an Ebay search you get a few options for supply. That's where I found some when I wanted them last March. They were/are imperial with a 1:48 taper.
