Garages

Hi can anyone tell me what Austin garages there were in Devon in the 1930s?
Thanks for any help

Re: Garages

My MK1 Ruby has a small suppliers plaque in the top front corner of the near side door card. The name on the plaque is P Pyke of Exeter and Plymouth. I did a little research on't tinterweb and found pictures of the owner and advertisements of the dealership in local paper archives. I might add that the car is as you would expect an Exeter registered car (bfj)of 1935.

Re: Garages

Have you seen this site, it only relates to Exeter, but has a photo of Pikes Garage, though without any Austin's visible. There's an old newspaper ad for an Austin dealer 'Motor Mac's' and a great 1938 photo of a second hand car dealer 'Portus Cars' with two Austin 7's for sale - AUV 446 & GN 3756. The page and photos are the copyright of David Cornforth and he requests that they not be posted on the web without his permission, otherwise I'd have posted the 'Portus Cars' photo here.

Have checked the Chassis Register and neither of the Seven's are on.

Also see this page showing Ruby CFJ 698 and its 'Maudes of Exeter' oval dealer suppliers plate - this Seven is on the Register.

Perhaps it might be worth asking the question regarding Austin Dealerships here:

You would need to register to access the following site, however you can view for example a 1930 Exeter & Plymouth Gazette which mentions a "showroom soiled only Austin 12 Fabric Saloon, never used or taxed for £265 and a 1927 Austin 7" .... you'll probably find lots of Austin dealer adverts in these old newspapers - may take some time though.

A couple more sites to check out that mention Austin Dealerships in Devon:

Re: Garages

I'd recommend everyone checks out the A30 / A35 Forum link I posted above, loads of photos of 1950's motoring in their 'once a day classic picture thread'

There's a great shot of a speed trial on The Western Lawns seafront at Eastbourne in the early 1960's, one of the cars looks a bit like a Speedex. Notice a Police road closure is in place.

Re: Garages

I think the AA and RAC handbooks used to list all the garages.

Someone must have a collection of these books.
