3 speed gearbox gasket/shim questions

I have been asked about assembling a late 20's 3 speed gearbox - some of the gaskets have the bearing hole smaller than the bearing o/d which doesn't seem right, being in contact with the bearing/shim.
Are shims (for 1st, 2nd and 3rd motion shaft bearings) available as spares- I can't see any listed.
Is there any trick for setting up the bearing shimming which seems a fiddly job - I suspect the possibility of slight axial movement is not critical in the box providing the gear mesh is reasonably central and must also be set with the selector rod shims to suit the gear positions.
