spark plugs d16 d21

Hi
My Special has recently started sooting up badly (all 4 despite having twin SUs). It didn't use to do this and there's no more leaning left in the jets. I've been advised to try D21s instead of D16s but am anxious about engine damage. Does anyone have any advice? Car is used for driving tests (lots of standing idling) and getting to them (lots of buzzing along)
