Needles.

I am seeking a source of Smiths type instrument needles for a project. Obviously I don't want to scrap usable instruments just for the needle, so any help finding some, would be much appreciated.

Re: Needles.

A clock restorer would be a good place to start asking Robert.

Re: Needles.

Thanks Ruairidh,
already tried some local clock restorers. The needle is similar to some of the pocket aneroid barometers.

Re: Needles.

In the last few weeks I've read an article about restoring vintage instruments but now can't remember where!
The author was having new needles/hands laser cut.

Re: Needles.

Robert,
Are any of these suitable?

Re: Needles.

PPD in Lochgilphead would etch them in brass for you, though you would need to supply them with a cad drawing. They do have a minimum order I'm afraid. I have a couple of people who do drawing for me if you're stuck - whether its worthwhile all depends on your budget.

Re: Needles.

Does anyone have a drawing or source of a gadget for carefully pulling a needle off its mounting? This would be really useful to aid stripping down an instrument for overhaul.

Many thanks Jeff. I have just ordered a lifter and a setter from the supplier you suggest.

Re: Needles.

Just a quick update, I sourced some needles from Patrick Henry of Vintage Instruments. Here's a one fitted with a homemade face printed on cream paper and fitted into an original Smiths case replacing the scrap innards.
