Worrying noises

My1932 Austin7 engine has developed a worrying noise,it's particularly bad from cold,I can best describe it as a growly shreeking sound most noticeable at low revs, the noise seems to be coming from the rear half of the engine,if I depress the clutch it makes no difference to the noise,so I assume it's not gearbox related.
The other problem I've recently experienced ,when the engine is working hard going uphill ,is a thrashing/flailing noise, when this occurs the engine loses power ,when I stop and let the engine cool everything is ok again, whether the problems are related I,m not sure?
All help and advice greatly received.

John.
