Mounting a vice on pivoting wall frame - How?

Getting ready to have another at the Austin Seven rejuvenation saga, now that weather has made working in the Carport more conducive, and having spent the last who know how long getting the Workshop organised and machine tools running.
That was some doing but very pleased with the outcome.

I need suggestions please on getting a 15lb Columbian No.564V (or W) vice mounted, and due to space limitations, am thinking of fixing a horizontally hinged/pivoting frame to the wall, with loose but attached bracing to the floor.

I will only need to use the vice if hefty work needs doing, so allowing it to swing down/up out the way is my thought.

I have crossposted here (ducking as in the era of Newsgroups this caused flaming and grief)

Took the rear Mud Shields of earlier in the week, and cursed one of the previous owners as they had used a mix of 'proper' fasteners and metric.

Geoff, The problem you are going to have is one of stability. You say that the vice is only to be used when "hefty work needs doing", there in lies the problem,I cannot see without solid mounting that any heavy work can safely be done. It could I suppose be possible to mount the vice on a hinged "table" with legs that swing down into suitable "holes" in the floor to provide some security, these could be braced with some sort of threaded bar, tensioning the legs against the wall. All a bit complicated. The weak point as I see it are the hinges,Large heavy duty ones without excessive side play will be required and probably be difficult to find at a reasonable price.I wish you luck

Yes indeed Peter, hence my request for ideas.
Made a slight error with weight as I got good old lb and new fangled kg mixed up.
The vice weighs 40lbs.
Wasn't thinking of normal hinges as, as you mentioned, real hefty ones would be needed, so was contemplating the use of steel bar acting as pivots for the A-frame/Sq-frame or similar, with feet to the floor, wedged between floor and wall, or some arrangement for them to be clipped/bolted to brackets at the point where the wall and floor meet.

There's no rush, as I don't want to make something in a hurry only to find it collapses on first useage.

If you search "farm gate hinges heavy duty" you should find a suitable hinge. Hinges that are for large wooden posts are long enough to go through a reasonably thick wall.

Looks like you're still having trouble with the weight is it really 40Lbs or as in your other posting 15Lb?

Geoff why not stick it outside on a steel post concreted into the ground. More room around it to work, you can place a bag over it to keep it dry. cheers Russell

Peter,
Just weighed again and it's 40Lbs. Got it right this time. What can an old f@rt say.

squeak,
If I was still in the Southern Hemisphere I would do so, but the UK's weather is not really conducive, but will see.
Some time ago I bought a heavy 18" diameter domed C.I. base 18" in diameter that has a 3" diameter steel tube bolted to it, thinking at the time of welding a plate on and mounting the vice on said plate.
May try this first as it will be quicker, easy to move and nothing lost if it doesn't prove stable enough.
A hole in the concrete for the post would work, but no facilities to make one, and our local plant hire place has just gone belly up.

Geoff - Just made all vice cross-shafts sticky so no more blood blisters

Thanks for the pointer.
Didn't realise there was such a big selection.

Modified three of my bench vices to have friction cross-shafts/handles so they stay where I want, and no more blood blisters on fingers.

Re: Mounting a vice on pivoting wall frame - How?

It's done.
Decided to try a Vice Stand first, using what I had available.
Top plate is 19"x12"X1/4"
Tube is 3"Ø X1/8"
Used my CT-312 TIG in anger for the first time, 'Walking-The-Cup" welding the top plate to the tube.
Only time will tell if it's suitable or not.

New thread started on the Rejuvination of the Ruby, first lot of photos showing engine coming out.
