CAV DEL Dynamo Brush Springs

Hi,
Yesterday I bought one of these dynamo's so that I could modify it to take a Rev counter drive at the bottom of the distributor.
Just starting on the strip down and clean up. One of the coil brush springs is missing and another is broken. The question is whether anyone had any spare in a drawer they would be interested in parting with.
If not, can other springs be substituted or can the brush holders from other dynamos fit.

Thanks in advance.

Depending how much dismantling you intend, but a report on the resistance wire arrangement if any trace of might assist the other DEL enquiry.

Re: CAV DEL Dynamo Brush Springs

Tom, if you can't find any ready made you might try making some.

I'd use 'Dentaurum' spring hard stainless steel wire.
Made for orthodontic use and was stocked by Walsh's in Beckenham for jewellery makers (or your local friendly dentist).

Re: CAV DEL Dynamo Brush Springs

From the photo looks like a spring from a lucas C39, C40 etc, dead common thru 50s and 60s, could be shaped to fit. Anyone working on UK cars of this era usually accumulates a pile of generators which outnumbers the good armatures. Can any of the local 1950s car clubs assist? Any auto electrician specialising in these should donate you a couple of springs. Do you have local links with the A40,A30,A60 etc set?

I have no idea what you know or dont know, so please do not take offence, but the 90 deg brush assembly is associated fixedly with the 4 pole casing; the 2 pole casing and armature is quite different; not just the bearings.

Tom

I might have the bits you need but they'll be in a box somewhere and I won't be able to look for a couple of weeks

Charles,
I have another person looking who thinks they may have some. If he is unable to find any I will let you know.

Thanks for the offer.

And if all else fails you've got the dentist next door.

Re: CAV DEL Dynamo Brush Springs

I've just had the dynamo for my 1929 Special refurbished by "Classic & Vintage Dynamos" (01623 747666). They did a great job and it might be worth enquiring if they can supply springs.

Re: CAV DEL Dynamo Brush Springs

Springs are all sorted, got a set from the brilliant Mr Hughes. They have fitted with a slight modification and work a treat.
Now once all the piece parts are all cleaned up, painted and assembled I should have a nice "light weight" dynamo.

Thanks for the other offers and suggestions. Particularly the dentist tip. As my Dad said there is one next door. I have already blagged a working compressor from them because they were getting an "upgrade".
