Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Hi Ruairidh

These are Lucas L471

see here

Googling will reveal a variety of sources for complete lamps & spares

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Thanks David.

I have tried a number of these over the years but they all end up leaking or just being rubbish at working, my query was more to find out if anyone had found some that worked particularly well for a long period. The tangs often become weak leaving a gap between the bulb contacts and the bulb holders rarely grip the body of the bulb which allows them to rattle about. Anyone overcome these issues?

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

if you don't experience bulb loss much, could you not just use cheap ones and add some silicone or solder to make them stay in place? You could then just carry a spare bulbholder with pre-fixed bulb in your spares?
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with a £2 holder - it sounds like vibration is the limiting factor...

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

That is a good idea Jon, the holders are riveted in place and would require drilling and reattaching each time however.

I am considering attaching one of the more robust ones from Paul Beck, as shown above, somehow. They look to be a far superior design.

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Good evening Ruairidh. I have restored lots of these type R (for rear) 471 rear lamps and my advice would be to buy original ones but beware there are many different bulb configurations.

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Thank you Stuart.

Current ones are original type but even they are beginning to malfunction.

If you have any decent ones for sale please get in touch :) Your pork pie LED conversion is still giving sterling service by the way, delighted with it.

Hi all

Does anyone know where I might get replacement dual contacts for a set of original Lucas L582 lamps? I know I can buy whole new lamps, but I'd rather use the originals and need to convert to stop and tail.

Many thanks

Peter

A Land Rover(Series or Defender)stop and tail light bulb holder maybe the answer.

Hello Ruairidh. Although I have a number of 471's in stock I don't have any pairs!
What bulb configuration were you looking for - separate tail & stop or combined stop/tail?
Thanks for the compliment about the LED pork pie lamp, you've reminded me that I must do one for the Ruby that we hope to use for my son's wedding.

Stop/tail please.

I have plant of the glass lenses, just need decent holders and backplate + rubber seal, thank you.

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Hi all,

Further to the problem of fitting a stop and tail LED bulb - RING do a good one part number: RINLED3829R 5/21w equivalent - however, it has offset pins and Paul Beck's L582 and his 422 bulbholder have parallel pins! I have in the past "bodged" the pins on a bulb so as to fit. Thus the following questions:

Is there a good bulbholder with offset pins that can be made to fit the L582?

Is there an acceptable way to modify the existing parallel pin bulbholder?

I would be grateful for any help or suggestions.

Bryan.

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

Bryan

Dynamo and Regulator Conversions does parallel pin LED bulbs. I bit the bullet and purchased a whole set (stop/tail, indicator, headlight) from him.

Not cheap, but nicely made and using high quality LED unlike the previous Chinese tail lamps I've been using. I'm really pleased with the headlights - the only problem is that the dynamo now charges at 6A with all the lights ON!

On the other hand, my brother has been known to file off the offset pin and solder lumps onto the bulb which can be filed up into a parallel pin. Seems to work OK.

Re: Lucas L582 Rear Lamps - conversion to dual pole?

All

For information, I have just received a pair of replacement dual pole lamp bases from Tim Hodgekiss.

They are the same as his reproduction lamps and as such are direct replacements.
