Re: fabric body

I don't mind the modern stuff, except you cant paint it - and it would be great to get the gold/silver paint specked finish for the Cup Model!

Peter

I have a vintage Bentley customer who skins his bodies in the modern strechy vinyl (i've always called it vinyde) and routinely paints, in celulose i think. Usually darker green, and then black which is then polished off to give a bit of 'patina'. looks very good too, if that's your thing.

Alan,

please let me know how you get on with the covering from Hewits as I am unhappy using the modern type of material available to skin my Cup Model, it is too heavy in my opinion. What you describe sound more like the material used originally - the problem with it was that is wasn't very waterproof and once the moisture got under it the frames rotted quickly, hence why the modern stuff is popular!

Very interested in what you find out about it please, the shiny finish is more in keeping with what I have seen as well.

Thanks in advance.

It's going to be a while! Progress is very slow and I'm on the back axle at the moment.

I'm doing a fabric bodied car myself. The outer fabric is basically book cloth a treated heavy cotton.

Hewits in Edinburgh do it. That's all I know so far

I have requested some samples from them and will report back what appears, thanks for sharing.

Ratchfords of Stockport were most helpful when I called in a couple of years ago to ask about Rexine...

I have also requested samples from here, thank you for sharing.

Re: fabric body

I got some Rexine samples recently from a Vintage Radio restoration company, don't have their details immediately to hand, but can find them if anyone is interested The graining and finish on sample they supplied matched exactly the appearance of some original trim remnants that I have. Unfortunately the cloth backing is thiner, I think it would work well enough for door cards but is probably not durable enough for other uses. I would be keen to hear feed back on the samples that you guys obtain.

Ratchford samples have arrived already - ordered yesterday :)

Nice feel to the cloth.

Re: fabric body

As the owner of a 1929 16/6 still with its original fabric body, I have often given thought to having it recovered, but, it being always garaged the condition of it is still reasonably "OK". The original fabric was Rexine which was produced by I.C.I. But they ceased production many years ago. But I believe it is still produced in India of all places!
So yes, I too would be interested in what comes out of this.

Re: fabric body

Peter, when you come to stretch the fabric around the window openings, you need to do it in a very warm atmosphere, as the material then becomes more plyable. Leave plenty of 'spare' material and grip with pliers when pulling it into shape, and keep it warn with the use of - say, a hair dryer. Good luck anyway.

Re: fabric body

"R" what fabric did you put on your Pearl roof, as I am nearly ready to do the hood on my 4str open tourer ?

Re: fabric body

I obtained my material for the Rosengart from Boyriven in Andover. I used the marine grade Vinyl. It may be of interest to some of you that I also used 1.3 mm thick 3 ply bendy plywood as a base before applying a layer of old army blanket and then the top fabric. This I found gave a stronger push resistance and solidified the ash framing.
