This morning I went to the local health centre for a routine blood test and took a book of crossword puzzles to pass the time - there can be a bit of a queue. i took a ticket, saw there were 7 before me and settled in for a wait.
I came to a clue which read, "Rupert is too conservative". I was thinking about it and half expected part of the answer to be "bear" but the answer had 14 letters split into three words of 6, 3 and 5 letters. Luckily I had some letters from the down solutions which, after a while, gave me the solution - "Behind the Times". (Rupert Murdoch not Rupert Bear).
Nothing very remarkable about that but, as I rested from my labours and looked at my fellow victims, I noticed a man I had met at a party about a year ago and I remembered his name was Rupert. He was deep in his newspaper so I leaned across the seat between us (now empty) and said, "Rupert, are you reading the Times?" and he was.
I showed him the half-finished crossword. We couldn't begin to work out the odds.
