Welsh regiments wearing a black ribbon on the back of their battle dress.
I was asked why the Welsh regiment wore black ribbons on the back of their uniform. The best I can come up with is when they wore a pig tail it was to keep the grease of the jacket Officers down to Sargent only. This was until 1900.I can find no defenat reason in any of my research. Can anyone out there help Roland
Re: Welsh regiments wearing a black ribbon on the back of their battle dress.
Roland, I served in the South Wales Borderers, The Monmouthshire Regiment (2 Bn) and the 1st Bn the Royal Welch Regiment as well as a 12 week course with the Welsh Guards. Only one Welsh Regiment wore the black ribbon on their uniform and that was the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Your explanation as to why they wore it may be right but I never bothered to ask them.
