I have my very own 44ft MLB engineer EN3/MKCS William Collette Ret.
who has very kindly agreed to help you with your engineering questions.

This accident lead to a number of major changes in the way the Coast Guard approached having such a small, independent unit in a remote area. This was indeed the end of 44's in alaska, being replaced by C-130's, 82's, 110's, 180's, etc. I have a friend not directly involved in the accident, but had good second hand knowledge. Remember, up untill the Quiliyute River disaster, this was the only 44 MLB lost in service! The crusty CWO who ordered the mission to continue was likely finished.

I think this boat was based at Auke Bay, Alaska and was replaced by USCG 44369 after the accident. Any information about the accident and the boat would be very much appreciated.
