No doubt every one has an opinion but as far as I'm concerned the Cummins was the best for the 44s. In the early 70's we had both at Cape D. 44304 and 44309 were Cummins V-200s, 44336 had 671 Gemmy's. It seemed to me the Gemmy's gained RPS quicker but the Cummins had more high-end torque. Both reliable so it's really a matter of taste.

Well, the cummings were quieter and smoother and your bones didnt hurt at the end of the day, but..............
taking a roll knocked them out. 44385 and 44396 at sta. humboldt bay got the jimmy 6-53. let me tell you, you could add quarters to the shims in the governor and jack up the rpms. that was sweet if you were racing. i think we went a full knot faster! ha
but seriously, i was upside down in the engine room twice trying to jimmy the electric system as we always had a blowout due to the radar. flipped twice while upside too but them motors never died. always a puddle of oil in the bilge and ya, did have a runaway once, but losing power in rolling surf is no fun. it was much better to clean the bilge instead of cleaning my shorts. if your life depends on it, take the jimmy!
