I was 20 when my former husband and I with our 2 toddlers flew from the UK as 10pound poms in Oct 1965, sponsored by AIS .We were at Unanderra Hostel for approx 8 months in Cell Block A :) We lived in Wollongong, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne & Sydney over the next 7 yrs before separating and I returned to UK with my 2 daughters. We returned approx 10yrs later and have lived here ever since. Despite yearly visits back to UK to see my parents over a 25yr period before they both passed away I could never live anywhere else but Australia..love it here. I now have 4 Australian grandchildren & 3 greatgrandchildren. The migrant hostels might have been a huge shock to the system but they did give us a start here we might never have had, for that I am eternally grateful.

I am trying to trace my late father\'s (Duro Susec) steps from leaving Croatia in the late 1950\'s to Germany and then onto Australia on an assisted passage. He came into Melbourne and stayed at Bonegilla for a short time. he was then transferred to AIS to work and stayed at Unanderra Hostel March/April 1960 for about 15months. Am trying to track down a list of people who stayed at the Hostel at the same time.

Website is great.

My family then decided to go to N.Z. due to false promises about jobs in the steel works.....best move we ever made....but I still didn't settle and returned home after 2 years...the rest of my family followed soon after ....oh! the memories....lol

Harking back to my comment about WCC council and it selling ways ... 6 committed people took only 4 months to save the park from sale to a developer [for a 100 bed ethnic nursing home]. It was announced in the Illawarra Mercury on 6th January 2006.

We as a family moved to Australia 1968 via Southampton UK on the 10 pound passage. We were at Unanderra hostel until my dad Nicholas Ferguson had an accident in port kembla swimming pool and a week later he died. My mum decided to go back to Ireland. Does anybody remember us or anything about my mum kathleen who since died of cancer 14 years ago. I now live in Mayo, Ireland.

Hi Len ,
Thankyou for this website giving me a nostalgic viewing. From 1960 to 1963 my husband was a manager at Berkeley and Balgownie Hostels. Most of that time was spent at Berkeley. Sorry Kevin I don't remember the polio in the hostel. The Mangers Houses were on top of the hill at Berkeley and I remember how someone tried to burn two of the houses down.Ours was not one of them. I sure have many memories Of CHL. We spent 18 and a half years in various ones before we returned to NZ from whence we had come. My children were all brought up in hostels and apart from one who died 8 years ago they have done very well in life. They had some friends in the hostels at times ,but it was hard on them as the hostel kids didn't want to play with them because they were managers kids and the kids at school didn't want to because they were from the hostel.Ho hum.
Kind regards
Phyl in NZ

Congratulations on a great website, you brought back many memories. Unanderra hostel was our first home in Oz after sailing out from England as 10 pound Poms on the Castel Felice in 1970, AIS being our sponsor. We then were allocated a housing Commission house in Coventry St Berkeley. Our 3 children attending Berkeley West and later Berkeley High .We later purchased our home from the Housing Commission and lived happily in that home for 24 yrs before moving to Qld to retire.
We will have to go through our old photos and see if we have any pics of the old hostel which we shall be pleased to pass on .
The hostel by the way has long gone, replaced with light industrial buildings, but your memory of the hostel site was spot on .
Cheers Aud and Dave

I stayed at Unanderra Hostel in 1959 with my mother, father and 3 siblings. We came from Albury, where we spent a few months after arriving in Melbourne on "Castel Felice" in december 1958. We came from Denmark and as a twelve year old I thought it was very exciting to experience a whole new world. Good initiative to make a homepage about the hostel. Miss some good pictures of the place. Unfortunately the family decided to go back to Denmark in 1965 - I loved living in Australia

There are still many people living in Berkeley who came here as migrants in the 1950's, some stayed at the hostel, some were housed in DOH houses and flats, and some bought those houses and stayed on. I wonder how those residents feel now that the local WCC council has discussed selling the park in Winnima Way for an aged care facility, and demolishing the community hall, n/hood centre and health centre? There will be a public meeting soon

We lived on Fairy Meadow Hostel 1974 for nearly a year all the time just waiting for the 2yr period to be up. When we leased a unit our attitude changed, I couldn't believe the ammount of meat and vegies I could get for $12. I remember sending a letter home to my Mum and sarcastically put the return address as Buckingham Palace, my Mother took this as fact and put that as the address someone in the Post Office had a sense of humour and put on try the hostel. The Nissan huts that we lived in ended up being home to Chickens at Cambletown, makes you think when the illegal immigrants complain. The hostel was not nice but it was not supposed to be and we were thankful for the help it gave. I am now what I call a Possie, (a Pommie by birth but an Aussie by choice)
Mind you I do feel at times like a displaced person, when I go to England they say "where are you from" and when I get home they say "oh a B***** Pommie" all in good fun. I love my adopted country and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Take care and God bless

Great to see the site. Like Kevin from NZ, we lived in Berkeley Hostel from 1954 to 1956. We then scored a house in in Berkeley West. I thought the hostel was great and had loads of fun and adventure. However, it must have been tough on the parents. People wouldn't put up with those conditions today. The Berkeley Hostel site is now teaming with houses and it's hard to remember it was once filled with all those huts. Keep up the good work.

I emigrated when I was 8 with my parents to Australia in 1956. We were sent to Balgownie Hostel, where we stayed for the next two years. My mum (Molly Andrews) detested it the whole time she was there,my dad (Harry Andrews)just got on with it. For my sister Judith and I it was an adventure. During that time we went to Fairy Meadow Infants School( quite a rough school in those days). I visited Balgownie site in 2002 and see that it is now a University Campus. Several of the old buildings are still there ( two canteens the laundry room and I think the kids tv room (now a small library). We eventually went to Geelong in Vic. and came beck to the Uk in 1967 for a "3 month trip". Please keep up the good work and anyone who can remember me from those far off days please contact me.
