Rights: Paramilitary destroys Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia, May 2 (UPI) --

Colombia's paramilitary forces threaten the country's democracy and human rights, Human Rights Watch said in a letter Wednesday to President Alvaro Uribe.

The accusation against the right-wing group comes amid a scandal linking several Uribe allies with the group, which has been accused of drug trafficking and other crimes.

The warning by the international rights group came as a reply to Uribe's letter to Human Rights Watch in April following the group's testimony on Capitol Hill about the human rights situation in Colombia.

The Colombian leader was in Washington Wednesday to seek congressional support for a free-trade agreement between his country and the United States. Uribe also is seeking Congress' approval of an extension of the Colombian military assistance package for combating drug trafficking in that country.

The United States already has spent more than $4 billion in aid and military training for Colombia's anti-drug campaign, criticized by some as being ineffective in preventing the trafficking of drugs from the world's largest cocaine producer to the United States and elsewhere.
