Moscow protests could stall summit
BRUSSELS, May 2 (UPI) --
Attacks on the Estonian embassy in Moscow could result in a delay in a planned European Union-Russia summit this month. Eduars Stiprais, the Latvian ambassador to the union, told the EU Observer Wednesday that the summit could be postponed. "It's difficult to understand how the Russian law enforcement authorities were able to disperse so effectively some peaceful protestors a few weeks ago, but are now unable to maintain law and order on the streets of Moscow," Stiprais said. Estonian diplomats were sealed inside the Estonian embassy in Moscow while some 500 members of Russian nationalist youth groups protested outside, the Observer said. The nationalist groups are angry about the removal of a Soviet-era statue from Tallinn's city center to a military graveyard outside the city. While many Estonians see the soldier as a symbol of Russian oppression in the last century, ethnic Russians see its removal as an insult to the Russian World War II effort.
