Aussie state approves therapeutic cloning
MELBOURNE, May 3 (UPI) --
Victoria has become the first state in Australia to allow therapeutic cloning. The upper house of the state Parliament approved a controversial amendment to the Infertility Treatment Act that will allow IVF embryos to be used to create stem cells. State Health Minister Bronwyn Pike said the 23-16 vote places Victoria in the forefront of medical research. The measure had already passed the lower house and now goes to the governor for his signature. "It means that our scientists are very well placed to apply for licenses, under a very strict regime, to continue their research into therapeutic cloning," she said.
