NYT hires new public editor

NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) --

Former Knight-Ridder Washington bureau chief Clark Hoyt has been named a public editor at The New York Times.

Hoyt, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and editor, oversaw Knight-Ridder's coverage of the Bush administration's case for the Iraq war, the Times said Thursday.

The Times said Knight-Ridder "stood apart" from the mainstream press in the early days of the war in questioning the Bush administration's claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and ties to al-Qaida.

Hoyt's wife, Linda Kauss, is a deputy managing editor at USA Today, the Times said.
