Cutty Sark ablaze

LONDON, May 21 (UPI) --

The historic British sailing ship Cutty Sark, relegated to dry-dock duty as a museum in recent times, was engulfed in flames Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said the vessel was "100 percent" ablaze and eight fire engines were summoned to fight the flames, the BBC reported. There were fears that gas cylinders onboard could explode and residents living nearby were evacuated.

Richard Doughty, chief executive of the Cutty Sark Trust, said he had been told by authorities they were treating the fire as suspicious.

The Cutty Sark was closed to visitors while undergoing a $50 million renovation in the Greenwich town center in southeast London. Its masts had been removed.

The clipper was built in 1869 to transport tea and other cargo across the oceans.
