Irish election up in the air
DUBLIN, Ireland, May 21 (UPI) --
Opinion polls indicate no clear leader in Ireland's parliamentary elections Thursday. Ireland's economic resurgence was not enough to guarantee a third term for Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, leader of the Fianna Fail Party, the Times of London reported. His main opponent is Enda Kenny of the Fine Gael, which is offering an "alliance of change" with the Labor Party. Polls indicate Fianna Fail could lose seats but remain Ireland's largest party after Thursday's election, the Times reported. That would leave party leaders working to form a coalition government in the 166-seat parliament, or Dail, the newspaper said. Outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former U.S. President Bill Clinton have made televised appearances supporting Ahern, who has held the prime minister's office since 1997. Kenny has been a member of parliament since 1975 and is a former minister for tourism and trade.
