Re: General developments

Wizard
No sooner do I criticise James St as a bad road to cycle down, that I see it has been entirely re-tarmaced and the cycle lanes have been widened to an almost obscenely generous size. Full marks to the Council!

If someone is reading this forum and acting on improvements tout-suite, might I next launch into a tirade about Cardiff Airport, the Coal Exchange, the lack of an Arena and the surface of the Oval Basin....

PS Is it just me or does anyone else have trouble with the security codes to post a message. It's like a bad day on Ticketmaster.

I find I need to use the security codes about five times per post. I also find that a lot of my posts are blocked as 'spam' that's the bloody despot that is paul exercising his power.

Can you add the PDR to that list

Re: General developments

may have missed a few topics somewhere so please tell me if there is a post elsewhere

two queries
what is going up just up from the zurich offices on dumballs road, looks impressive, modern design.

also, where the old warehouse on the corner of Callaghan square was a new tent type structure has gone up, any ideas?

Its hideous and won't be missed. Whilst they are at it bulldoze the shops by ty cefn road as well.

Re: General developments

I wouldn't describe it as beautiful, but I do think it's reasonably attractive, of its time and considerably more thoughtful and interesting than its intended replacement. I have much sympathy for those who'd prefer to keep it.

Re: General developments

It's 'ok' and that's about it. Not sure why they're demolishing it anyway, can someone elaborate? The latter is particularly uninspiring but libraries themselves are going to be continuously threatened.

Also not sure they can blame Phil Bale! Give the guy a break!

Re: General developments

The old one's a fine building.

The new one is horrifically banal...all the way down to the 80s style red windows. Really depressing

I wonder what happened to it. Was it broken up or is it in storage somewhere?

Re: General developments

Not sure if this has been discussed on here. Some social housing apartments in place of Canton police station

I have to say I'm looking forward to seeing how Saint Fagans changes over the next few years. It's a great attraction which I love to bits but the indoor gallery spaces are tired and circulation through the site is a bit random.

The plans look as if they will give a much greater feeling of coherence to the site with clearly defined rural, urban and history zones.

It looks very much like the model from the Cardiff Bay visitor centre to me!

Re: General developments

I wasn't sure where to put this but I suppose here is as good as any. it would appear this model has a massive Havannah Quay development and the central square/station southside area as being akin to Battery Park

Re: General developments

I don't think I've seen this mentioned before.

I don't know whether it is the same concept and merely in a different location but plans were approved by the Council Planning Committee meeting in May for a facility in Atlantic Wharf. I only came across it while reading the "Save Llandaff Meadow" papers and cannot even remember what it was called so apologies if it has already been discussed to death elsewhere on here.

I would assume the Atlantic Wharf facility is the wakeboarding thing that was first applied for a couple of years ago.

Two different things I think. The Atlantic Wharf plan is for is a pully system for watersports. The White Water Centre one appears to be a high rope climbing attraction - similar to this one in Brecon.

Re: General developments

What would be great for the Bay is a 'Zipworld' type ride from, maybe Sports Village across to Marina or Barrage The one in Snowdon looks epic and would be a great addition there. There is a similar one in Eden Project but I think the Snowdon one is the chocolate.

Re: General developments

Seems like they have started work on the apartments on Bute street next to the bay station. Also noticed Admiral are illuminating the top of the building now.

Re: General developments

According to Business Traveller website a new Holiday Inn is due to open in the next few weeks at Junction 32 of the M4 - presumably on the old Legacy International site - http://www.businesstraveller.com/news/100675/four-uk-holiday-inns-announced

In other news old Fosse unit beneath St David's Hall is now a dodgy looking carvery restaurant and the old Promised Land bar in Windsor Terrace is now another real ale style pub (whose name escapes me) apparently owned by the same company as The Rummer Tavern.

Re: General developments

Wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Plans have been submitted for a 6 storey office block somewhere between the AA and Lloyds buildings on the south west corner of Callaghan Square. Not sure exactly where and the Council website seems to be down ATM so can't access the planning docs.

I think it might be a different plot that fronts Curran Road, two old buildings in old stone and red brick. I think it is currently Itec, who provide apprenticeships, and their car parking.

I was looking at this the other day and was thinking about where the stairs/lifts are as clearly the building is only as wide as the front room. Since this building is fairly long you can only assume that the stairwell is in the centre with flats either side of it (front and back). That makes them tiny, no more than a crash pad really.

Re: General developments

Anyone know what is happening to the unit that until recently housed Graham Griffiths Estate Agents at the top of Cowbridge Road East, near Victoria Park.

The estate agents moved out last month and it appears they are changing it into something else.

I have just bought a house around the corner so am interested to find out what is going there.

Re: General developments

Kyle

It may not be all that exciting but it's good that any extension to the retail park is having a path to the new homes.

I drive past that area in the mornings on my way to work, I know it's only a housing development but I'm looking forward St. Edeyrn rising out of those fields and the city getting a sizable number of new homes. There seems to be quite a bit going on at the moment with a few of the bigger schemes waking up again (St.Edeyrn, Ely Mill and Dumballs Road).

Talking of big housing developments in this part of the city, any news on any of the others such as the 4,000 or at the scheme by Redrow between Lisvane and Pontprennau ? I did see a planning application as I drove down the lanes (St.Mellons Road) between both areas this morning. I'm not sure if it's related to this though.

I actually work in the Business Park and live near The Mill so I'm keen to see them both get going soon (though I'm sure I'll change my mind when the inevitable traffic problems arise!). The amount of talk and planning applications I've seen recently regarding the access road into St Edeyrn's makes me think this is most likely the next "big" development we are likely to see.

I think the planning applications you've seen around Lisvane are probably linked to some of the smaller housing developments (about 3 of about 50 or so houses dotted around the perimeter of the larger development). I doubt we'll see any movement on the larger Lisvane scheme for a while because I'm sure I saw somewhere that the sale of the land is being investigated...

This is in the news today related to the St.Edeyrn development

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/councillor-calls-proper-procedures-followed-6802838

Seems like there is some fannying around going on :

"Coun Rees, ward councillor for Pontprennau and Old St Mellons, claims Welsh Government officials told her it has not yet received the required paperwork from Cardiff council as part of the call in process three months after the planning committee’s decision. But she said Cardiff council officers told her this paperwork had been sent."

You never know, they might get a house built by 2020 !

Re: General developments

The speed at which things move in Wales really is glacial (the rest of the UK isn't much better, mind).

Take for instance the "Circuit of Wales". The latest news is pretty worrying and I'm left feeling that the developers have been quite dishonest in their dealings with the local, Welsh and UK governments: implying the development could be undertaken for minimal public outlay, and after receiving approval and political support, then saying "oh we need £50 million by the way". I'm much less inclined to support the development now - it doesn't seem to be very commercially viable and has no firm commitments from the industry. But, another piece of news is that it might take up to a year to sort out issues around redesignating a replacement piece of land as "common land". Thats right, a bit of unsightly heather and scrub next to an industrial estate thats used by virtually noone was "common land" and therefore a whole lot of paperwork needs shuffling to designate some other nearby land as "common land".

Re: General developments

When I watched Week In Week Out yesterday, any good faith I had to the Circuit of Wales had vanished. We should quit giving handouts to this white elephant and cut our losses. I always thought it was being built in the wrong place and for it to have a chance of being remotely successful it would have to be on the M4 corridor and ideally within 30 minutes of Cardiff.

I've fixed the shocking spelling mistake. shoddy journalism

Re: General developments

I walked past the old Rumpoles building yesterday and from what I could see demolition has started.

Re: General developments

There is an application in for the demolition of Canton Police station and build of 17 flats over 2 to 4 storeys. An artists impression is here -

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-applications/files/B55CAEA22FCCE7206CF81E38797F7D1C/13_02071_DCO-Perspective_image29271170000.jpg-1477486.jpg

Looks ok. Shame they couldn't demolish the Iceland next to it at the same time.

Re: General developments

There is an application for that patch of Wasteland next to the Cardiff City Stadium (by the Sand Martin), remember it was earmarked to be a hotel with ground floor units, potentially a restaurant etc.

Well the application is in, it's going to be...

A Lidl!

I always thought the site would've been used for a hotel but looks like Lidl has got there first. I'm indifferent TBH

Re: General developments

I'd have rathered the hotel/ground floor units option as well - if I recall the design was 5/6 storeys which would have created a decent bulk along that side of the road, whereas a superstore will be very low-rise.

Having said that, I think Lidl will do well there.

Re: General developments

There's another supermarket no far down the road isn't there? Is it Asda. Never really sure about the idea of flats there. Football or any large crowd event can be a nuisance for residents. As for a hotel, again the stadium might have been a draw but it's pretty out of the way isn't it?

Yeah, there's an Asda just down from there, plus a Costco (which I think you need to be a member to join).

I wouldn't say the site is anymore out of the way, hotel-wise, than the hotel in Ocean Way, or off Eastern Avenue, for example. Hotels like premier inn or travelodge (I've a feeling the latter had been lined up for this) are often sited in fairly non-central locations these days.

Close to the dual carriageway, very close to the stadium, on the right side of town to get to the airport (laughs and rolls eyes) - I think it would be a very good site for a budget hotel.

Re: General developments

Anyone know what is going on the waste land at Callaghan square next to the Salvation army? There were people piling and testing the ground today.

Re: General developments

I guess is relates to this:

"Having acquired a yet to be developed five acre parcel of land at the Callaghan Square office scheme from MEPC, the Welsh Government is expected to see construction start on a new 100,000 sq ft office scheme by the end of the year – with completion in late 2015 or early 2016. This will cost in the region of £15m."

From Wales online in June.

On a separate note - they are just about finishing installing about 40 chunky metal bollards as security measures outside the red brick National Assembly building on Bute Place - presumably to make it more difficult for Jantra to launch the inevitable pitchfork attack cometh the revolt
