Signature on Fabric Saloon woodwork

When preparing the body of my fabric saloon for recovering I found what appears to be a signature written on the top nearside front to back wooden rail, just behind the "B"post.

You can see the image which has been enhanced at

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a list of the coach-builders at Austins which will help me identify the craftsman?

Re: Signature on Fabric Saloon woodwork

We've found initials or full signatures chalked on almost every seat back that's come our way. Some of them have appeared more than once.

This is so universal that Dave and I have decided to revive the tradition on all of the seat backs that we make!

Location: Herefordshire, with an "E" not a "T".

Examples of seat-back signatures, including one from a cabriolet signed by Alan Slipper.

Martin
The rear seat back my car also has chalked initials.
Like you I have added my signature to the wooden frame for posterity and the next restorer to discover but the seat back is to far gone to use.

Have just learnt to use the photobucket link so this is the signature in question

Re: Signature on Fabric Saloon woodwork

Nick, Martin,

I found a very clear signature and date on the n/s door card of a '29 fabric saloon I once owned. I have no idea as to whether the person was male or female and at the time I did wonder whether the signature was part of the manufacturing process. eg traceability for instance, or they had just done it for posterity.
I did try to research the person but without success.

My RN back seat has an inscription painted on the rear.

Doors repaired and this painted 26-4-94
