Horn

Has anybody written about the various horns used in A7s?
I'm interested in the general history, and particularly in what is the correct horn for my (Jan 1936) Mk I Ruby.
Apologies if this has been done before.

Re: Horn

I think that your car should have a Rist horn like this David.

Re: Horn

Ruairidh,
Yes I thought that was possibly the case.
However, when I bought my car it had a different horn (not working) that was very similar, but not identical, to this one, which I have bought:

That is a Bosch horn, perhaps you car was built in Berlin by Willys Overland (I think that the type you have however is perhaps newer than your car)? There should be a little oval plate screwed right in the middle of that type of horn which carried the model number and would have given you a clue to the type of vehicle it was fitted to, see this example (this and others on the linked website suggest that you have a bargain purchase!):

Re: Horn

The 1931 Handbook shows Benjamin and Rist as horn suppliers but all the later books I have only show Rist up to 1937.

Re: Horn

Good evening David. Perusal of my 'Lucas' data for 1936 suggests that the Mk1 Ruby was fitted with the 'Rists' horn (trumpet type) as shown in the photo. However the Mk11 Ruby was fitted with the Lucas HF934 'Altette' horn which is a short cylindrical shape distinguished by a large nut in the centre and 6 on the circumference.
However change over was never straight forward and some Mk11 Rubies might well have been fitted with 'Rists' horns until the supply dried up.

Re: Horn

Thanks, everyone, for the interesting information.
Stuart, your Lucas horn description matches my other (non-working) horn, which was on my car when I bought it.
Best regards,
