Introduced into the Wellington - Lyttelton service in 1985, Spirit of Competition became one of the routes longest serving ships. She was affectionately known by those associated with her as SPOC.
Reduced loadings and increased costs saw her laid up at Wellington on 8 November 2008 and advertised for sale. Sold to Piri Reis Shiiping Ltd., Turkey and renamed Blacksea K she sailed from Wellington on 12 March 2009 bound for Istanbul.
