Amused that I've never met a single Hulme old boy since leaving Nottingham Uni in the 70's, and was only reminded when I saw Phil Larder on the TV coaching England the other day. Do I still hold the school sprint records? |

Update: still working far too many hours in corporate finance at deloitte and living in didsbury. richard jackson lives 10 doors away these days, whilst richard scholes recently announced his engagement to his spanish girlfriend. One of my most vivid memories is scholes' complete ineptitude at spanish (i'd love to see the ironic smile on mr miles' face!!) |

Thought I'd updated this long ago but evidently not. I got doctored a while ago, after the PhD ran on a bit. Did some time in an RA contract being a "real" physicist then got bored. I finally realised that what I really liked was the engineering side rather than the dry theory, and once I finished building kit and getting it working I got bored. So for the past two years I've been working for a little engineering company in Manchester- not too far from Oldham (near the new stadium). Though I still live in Lancaster and commute as needed- lots of the work can be done from home. Company URL is www.aail.co.uk and we pretty much do anything that involves making a computer do real world stuff. One project was a machine that pushes barnacles off a ship and measures the force to determine how good the antifouling paint is. Another is a piece of test gear for Airbus, where the physics came in handy and got us a couple of patents. So it's still useful in small doses. Shows how long it's been since I first stuck something here; the "kid on the way" I mentioned is now a little boy who started school six months ago and is presently waving a laser pointer around the room behind me, making pretty patterns on the wall. |
